Flat roofing is used right across Devon on house extensions, garages, dormers, commercial buildings and industrial units. Modern systems such as EPDM and other single ply membranes give better waterproofing, last longer and need less maintenance than the old felt roofs many properties still have.
Which flat roof system is right for you?
There isn't one answer for every building. The three systems we fit most often each have their place:
- EPDM rubber, such as Firestone RubberCover. One large sheet, so there are few or no joins, and it copes well with sun and frost. Ideal for extensions, garages and dormers.
- GRP fibreglass. A hard-wearing, seamless finish that's good on roofs with lots of detailing or where people will walk. Chris is a Restec trained installer for the Flexitec GRP system.
- Felt. Still a sensible choice on some outbuildings and garages, and for like-for-like repairs.
It's the installation that counts
Most flat roof problems we're called to aren't down to the material. They come from what's underneath and around it: a deck that isn't sound, falls that let water sit, outlets that block, and poorly finished edges and upstands where the roof meets a wall. Get those right and any good membrane will do its job for many years.
A properly built flat roof also gives you the chance to improve insulation, which keeps the room below warmer in winter and cooler in summer. It finishes the building with a clean, modern look too.
Homes and businesses
For homeowners, a flat roof usually sits over a kitchen extension or garage, so the priority is keeping it watertight with as little disruption as possible. For businesses, it's often a larger area where the work has to fit around the working day. We plan both with realistic schedules and clear up after every job.
