A roof window lets in far more daylight than a wall window of the same size, and it helps with ventilation too. The part that matters most is the bit you don't see: the opening trimmed into the rafters, the membrane dressed round the frame, and the flashing fitted to the slates or tiles. Get that right and it stays dry for years.

Velux windows: common questions
Do I need planning permission for a Velux window?
Most roof windows don't need planning permission, as long as they don't stick out more than 150mm from the roof or sit higher than the ridge. If your house is listed or in a conservation area, check with Exeter City Council first.
Can you replace an old Velux window?
Yes. Many replacements are a straight swap into the existing opening, with a new flashing kit.
Will a roof window leak?
Not if it's fitted with the right flashing kit and the roof around it is finished properly. That's why it's worth having a roofer fit it.
