EPDM roofing is made to cope with the UK climate. It's a synthetic rubber membrane that stands up well to rain, UV and big swings in temperature, which makes it a good flat roof choice for properties in Devon, where wet winters and the odd hot summer are both part of the deal.
What makes EPDM suit our weather
- It stays flexible. Rubber moves as the roof warms and cools, so it's far less likely to crack than older materials as temperatures change through the year.
- It handles UV. Summer sun breaks down some roof coverings over time. EPDM is made to resist it.
- Few or no joins. On most domestic roofs EPDM goes down as one sheet. With fewer seams, there are fewer weak spots for driving rain to find.
- It copes with standing water. No flat roof should hold water for long, but EPDM tolerates the occasional puddle better than many alternatives.
Low maintenance, long life
Once it's fitted, an EPDM roof needs very little looking after. Keep outlets and gutters clear, check the edges and upstands after a storm, and it will do its job for many years. Some EPDM systems come with manufacturer guarantees of up to 25 years when they're installed to specification.
Installation is everything
EPDM is only as good as the person fitting it. The deck must be sound and dry, the membrane properly bonded, and the edges, corners and upstands detailed correctly. That's where most flat roofs fail.
Chris is trained on Firestone RubberCover EPDM, a system designed for homes, and fits it to manufacturer specifications so your warranty is protected. Every new roof we fit also carries our own minimum 5-year guarantee.
EPDM works well on extensions, garages, dormers, porches and bay roofs, as well as larger commercial areas. To find out whether it's right for your roof, call Ayre Roofing on 07803 365 251 or read more on our single ply and EPDM roofing page.
