What This Week's Amber Heat Warning Means for Roofs in Exeter

With the Met Office issuing an Amber Extreme Heat warning for much of southern and eastern England this week, temperatures are set to peak around 37°C on Thursday. Most of the advice doing the rounds is about staying hydrated and keeping out of the midday sun — sensible enough — but few people stop to think about what a spell of intense heat actually does to the roof over their heads.

Roofing materials expand and contract with temperature swings, and after a hot, dry summer like this one, that movement can loosen tiles, dry out old felt, and open up small gaps around flashing that were fine in cooler weather. It's rarely dramatic on its own, but it's exactly the kind of minor wear that turns into a leak the moment autumn rain arrives.

The Met Office warning also flags real risks for anyone working outdoors, roofers included, with the British Red Cross advising regular breaks, shade, and plenty of fluids during the hottest parts of the day. It's a good reminder that roofing work in weather like this needs to be planned properly, not rushed through regardless of conditions — both for the safety of the people doing it and the quality of the finished job.

If it's been a while since your roof was last checked, a spell of extreme heat like this is actually a sensible prompt to get it looked at. Catching a loosened ridge tile or a drying seal now, before the weather turns, is a lot less hassle than dealing with a leak in the middle of a downpour.
